Loggerhead ahead

Loggerhead sea turtle!!  In Kas,Turkey we saw lots of sea turtles. They where just floating on the surface of the water, hanging out and eating when we entered the beautiful bay. Mom and I went snorkeling and did a research project on them, we observed that the loggerhead sea turtle eats sea grass on the bottom of the ocean in a very interesting way. They rip it out of the sand by grabbing the top of the grass and jerking their head back to rip it out. We researched that they also eat crabs and jellyfish (we haven’t seen any jellyfish on this hole trip thanks to all the turtles!!!). The turtles can stay under water for a long time. We measured 13.4 minutes. After a period of time they have to pop their head out of the water to breathe. Sometimes they pop it out and back in to the water even 13 times, usually we counted between 2 and 6 times.

As we watched we sometimes yelled out in excitement, which would alert the animal and they’d quickly dove down. It also seemed to startle them when a motorboat went by, probably because of the noise.

We learned that the male sea turtles have a longer tail that sticks out under its shell. Some of the specimen we saw were male.

The smallest turtles we saw were about 15cm diameter. They were soooooooo ccccuuuuuttttteee!!!!!! And they seemed to be more sensitive to sound then their older brothers and sisters; personally I think that is because they have less life experience just like me!!!! (I’m not so easily startled, but we still have a lot in common for example: we both have green hear/skin!!!).

In the next bay that we went to after Kas there were also some turtles but not as many. There Mom and I went on the SUP again to hunt them down with my UNDERWATER CAMERA!!!   See the pics underneath.

  1. This is from Camille: Once in Hawaii my dad did some research of his own when he went into the ocean with his underwater camera when he spotted a sea turtle. Later when we returned to Victoria he showed us his video and me and my sister pointed out that the turtle had pooped on him while he was taking the video.

  3. It is great to engage in a project that gives you pleasure and lots of new information. You are so lucky that you have the support of your parents, the means to buy an underwater camera and last, but, most important, you are interested in learning new things about nature, animals,, plants, like olives etc.
Thanks for sharing all you exciting experiences. We follow everything with great interest.
    Cheers, Ingrid
Stay healthy and happy and don’t forget, Victoria is great too!
