David took Lucien (David’s 11 year old son) and us to his friend Cecile’s little restaurant “Le Zinzolin” in Avignon. The place is packed every Wednesday for a night of singing and singalong of French classic, fun and folk songs. Four musicians accompany the brave singers, the youngest being 6 years old! On a clip board people can write down their name, the name of the song they want to sing and the page in the songbook – so the audience can join in.
When the band started to play at 9 pm there was already a two page list of singers eager to perform. One of them being Lucien, who went up on stage twice that night. The kids and I held back ONLY because we didn’t recognize any of the songs in the songbook. Once we heard the music, though, a few were familiar to us. As the night progressed and the crowd got louder we, too, got more brave joining in!
Some singers were excellent as they interpreted Serge Gainsborough, Jacques Dutronc, Edith Piaf or Stromae. Some put on a great show even though singing might not have been there strongest personal talent. But all were contagiously enthusiastic – including the musicians and the audience. Even the hostess, Cecile, stepped onto the stage – together with Lucien and some other friends – to sing a tune dedicated to Lucien’s mom, who was celebrating her birthday in Lausanne that evening.

If you ever come to Avignon, check out “Le Zinzolin”. I have been told it is great in summer for a bite to eat on the street side patio. Address : 22 Rue des Teinturiers, 84000 Avignon, Téléphone : 04 90 82 41 55
Infectuous! Must have been a ball of fun.
Hugs,

Well, well……
